Summary:

The sanitation and drinking water networks were built and extended by and for the city. This existing heritage affects management practices: several studies have shown the primordial importance of knowing the installation date and pipe materials in order to estimate their current state of deterioration and predict their degradation. The challenge for Lyon Métropole is therefore to reconstitute the installation dates of the sanitation networks (24% of the linear known) and to ensure the reliability of the date for drinking water (97 of the linear completed, of which 97% presumed). In a more general sense, however, the challenge is to demonstrate that we can reconstitute these dates to enable other local authorities to meet regulatory constraints and implement effective heritage management. The scope of the project also extends beyond the sanitation and drinking water networks. HIREAU also aims to produce information on the history of the city and its development. It also constitutes an interesting application of semi-supervised learning, consisting in modelling decision-making based on partially labelled (known) statistical databases. This 36-month project, which emerged from the IMU community, therefore aims to further knowledge by combining expertise in Civil Engineering, Geography and Computer Science, as well as with partner practitioners (Eau du Grand Lyon, Lyon Métropole and Veolia).
